Civilization slowly being restored or dictator rising?
The Governor (David Morrissey) has made his first appearance in episode 3, Walk With Me. This was also the first episode that did not have Rick Grimes in it (thank you Chris Hardwick and your Subway fresh facts) or any of the other survivors aside from Andrea (Laurie Holden), Michonne (Danai Gurira) and the return of everyone’s favourite red neck, racist Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker).
It truly is a small world in the land of The Walking Dead as Merle and the Governor find Andrea and Michonne at the site of a helicopter crash which both groups have gone to investigate. They witness the G man killing one of the soldiers and this immediately shows him as a threat since they don’t know about the virus already incubating in everyone and just waiting to take over at death.
The Governor and his crew find the women, blindfold them and take them back to the sanctuary of Woodbury. On the surface, the village is perfect – food, shelter, medicine and security. Children go to school, people have jobs and the Governor keeps the peace and offers protection while overseeing everything. Of course, this is the world of The Walking Dead and peace is not going to happen for anyone. On the darker side of Woodbury is Merle. While he has been somewhat tamed by the Governor, he is still Merle and has a grudge to pay against Andrea, Rick and T-Dog. Adding to the weirdness of the village is the Governor’s doctor friend performing experiments on the biters (ala Romero’s Day of The Dead) and his “special” tea and the Governor’s private room -creepiest fish tank ever- and you have a not so safe town.
Final Thoughts: I continue to be impressed with this season. This was a great episode and a good introduction to the duel personalities of the Governor. I did think Andrea was a bit too eager to fall in line behind the Governor but given the situation, I can see why. As for Michonne, she was hard faced and mistrusting – smart. I can’t wait to see how the show progresses and get some answers to questions. Who the hell was watching Carol from the woods as she performed the C-section? Who is messing with the survivors security at the prison (preview for next episode) and I can’t wait to see how Daryl reacts/changes once he is reunited with Merle.
