Finding the Way
A couple of things to share. In May and October I have had 2 poems published through the Victoria Writers Society in the Island Writer Zine (links below). I joined the society earlier this year and made the decision and commitment to start, to go back, to writing seriously. Not that it wasn’t serious but the last few years have been difficult when it comes to focus and creativity. No end to reasons not to write but there are several reasons why it can be hard to sit and write when feeling pressure and stress in your day to day.
Joining VWS and the Federation of BC Writers were a stepping stone, a start to try to put myself out in the creative community. And it has not been easy. Social anxiety sucks and interacting outside my comfort zone is challenging. I’m working on it. One of the biggest leaps I made was applying and accepting a place in the Simon Fraser University Writer’s Studio for 2026-2027. My submission was a mix of short fiction and poetry and I was chosen to join the poetry cohort. I’ve written poetry since my first publication at the age of 7 in the Calgary Herald alongside my brother. Still have the clipping packed away.
That acceptance and now being immersed in TWS, is changing how I approach my creative life and how I want to move forward as a writer and poet. I have ambitions and plans which seem more tangible and are helping me accountable to what I want to accomplish and put out in the world. I’m trying hard to submit work to publications and contests and committing to a routine to get the words on the page and build a complete portfolio.
The biggest part of this journey is the writing and getting it done. The other part is getting out of my way and head and engaging in the community. As I’m finally getting over this illness, I’m looking forward to the Victoria Writer’s Festival and engaging in a couple of events. I was hoping for more but the day job obligations are a must.
As I continue down the path to build my confidence in writing and work on the social aspect of the creative world, below are the 2 poems published in 2026. Mend the Cracks touches on some of the difficulties from the past which were impacting creating. Things are better now. The support I have continues to help me move along this path, passing the crossroads of choice and change and moving to a new and satisfying phase of life.
