So I finally went to my first Con, a Supernatural Convention on August 24. It was an interesting experience. The convention was 3 or 4 days but I was only there for the Saturday and attended 3 panels: Felicia Day, Sebastian Roche and Misha Collins. There were of course other panels and events happening but these were the only ones I actually made it to.
I didn’t want to spend a whole day in a convention room and believe me, the 4 hours of waiting for a prepaid autograph was more than enough wait time (seriously from 8 to nearly midnight). Instead of being at VanCon 2013 for an entire day, my husband and I went to Granville Island for the first time, even though we go to Vancouver at least once or twice a year, and it was quite nice. The brewery tour was certainly a highlight (Granville Island Brewery) and it was just relaxing in general. Also did minimal shopping, no new purse but a new wallet and spiffy new shirt.
So what are my impressions of the actual convention? It was odd, interesting, entertaining – look up Sebastian Roche on YouTube, VanCon 2013; that was entertaining – but I can honestly say I don’t think I would do it again. Once was enough for this type of convention. I would defiantly like to go to another one but maybe not one that is centred solely on one TV show.
The vendors were nothing special, just merch you can buy online, nothing unique or different but that didn’t stop me from buying a couple of things. And what the is up with not being able to use Canadian debit in Canada?
It was interesting to hear the stars talk and see the rabid devotion of so many fans. Some of the outfits and costumes were good and the audience was mostly women of varying ages, some men but not very many younger people.
The overall trip was good and we even got to see a large pod of whales by Galiano Island from the ferry on the way back. Not a great pic but you can see a fin, sort of.
So that’s pretty much it. I met Misha Collins for like 10 seconds and got to find out what a Con vibe is like. Even though I don’t think I’ll be back next year, Supernatural is still my favourite show.
