A lazy summer evening, the sun dimly lighting the sky. Cool breezes through an open window, birds providing background music. And most important, a good book to get lost in is summer perfect. Here it is, mid August, summer is not quite waning but the change in weather is starting to be felt and those warm lazy vibes will turn to cool nights soon enough.
Summer reading is what really started my interest in reading, and reading horror in particular. As a 12 year old going on camping trips and fishing expeditions, books passed the time when typical outdoor activities lost their lustre. There are 2 books in particular that started this love for reading: Second Child by John Saul (picked up in a grocery store on the way to a campsite) and The Scream by John Skipp and Craig Spector (a pass down from my Grandmother and certainly not appropriate for a 12 year old).
Second Child evokes summer given the setting by the sea and set during, well summer. The Scream…..I recall bits and pieces, the nasty, upsetting ones but this one is a summer read because I read in the summer. While The Scream was intense and difficult to stomach in parts, it led me down a road of horror and to one of my favourite vampire books – The Light at the End also by John Skipp and Craig Spector.
At this time of year it gets me wanting to read books that are in season, so to speak. It’s the same in winter and autumn – wanting to wrap those seasonal books around my mind. I have high hopes of reading a bunch of the below books each year but I’m a slow reader and easily distracted. Here are my ideas for summer reads. Comments, suggestions, throw them at me!
Second Child by John Saul
The Scream by John Skipp and Craig Spector
The Light at the End by John Skipp and Craig Spector
The Stand by Stephen King
Midnight in the Garden of Good Evil by John Berendt
The Witching Hour by Anne Rice
Reluctant Immortals by Gwendolyn Kiste
The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampire by Grady Hendrix
